DHANGADHI — CMG Club Sankata has defeated Dharan Football Club in sudden death and advanced to the quarter-finals of the second International Invitational Nepal Ice Farwest Khaptad Gold Cup Football Tournament here at the Dhangadhi Stadium on Sunday.
Sankata won in the seventh penalty attempt after the match was pushed to sudden death as full and extra time ended in goal-less draw.
Sankata’s Abhisek Rijal sealed the victory in sudden death after custodian Binay Shrestha saved a shot from Dharan’s Roshan Khadka. The Kathmandu-based ‘A’ division outfit became the third team to register victory on penalties.
Likewise, other players of Sankata — Anil Gurung, Bishwo Adhikari and Saroj Dahal — converted their shots from the spot, while Dharan’s goalie Roshan Khadka saved shots from Sushil Lama and Bhusan Subba.
Bartaman Rai, Roman Limbu and Suraj BK scored for Dharan on penalties, while Subodh Shahi hit wide and Saujan Rai was denied by Sankata goalkeeper Binay Shrestha.
The shot of Dharan’s Prakash Budhathoki was stopped by Sankata goalie Binay Shrestha.
Binay Shrestha continued his heroics by saving three more penalties during shoot-out and sudden-death to deliver his team a victory. Shrestha won ‘Medical Studies and Health Sciences’ man-of-the-match with Rs 10,000 in cash prize for saving four penalties on the day.
After the winning, Sankata’s coach Salyan Khadgi said that they were under pressure during the first half of the match.
