India says a final goodbye to Sridevi

MUMBAI — Thousands of heartbroken fans line the streets of Mumbai as India bids farewell to Bollywood icon Sridevi following her shocking death from accidental drowning in a Dubai hotel bathtub aged 54.

Sridevi’s mortal remains arrived in Mumbai on Tuesday night, some 72 hours after her sudden and shocking demise in Dubai.

Top Bollywood actors and other film personalities and thousands of teary-eyed fans carrying flowers and chanting prayers arrived at Mumbai’s Celebration Sports Club on Wednesday to pay their last respects to India first female superstar.

Some carried roses while others held photos of the late screen icon as they queued patiently to pay their final respects at a condolence service in the western Indian city.

Sridevi’s body, draped in a magenta and gold Kanjeevaram saree and flowers, has been placed in a transparent casket at the club, a short distance away from her home in the posh Lokhandwala complex. The funeral was held at the Pawan Hans crematorium in Ville Parle.

Heavy security lined the streets to control the crowds, which included people who had travelled hundreds of kilometres to be there.

Sridevi was considered to be one of the most influential Bollywood actresses of all time and her sudden death at the weekend sparked an outpouring of grief in India.
