ACHHAM — In a bid to end the social ill practice of Chhaupadi, women here in Nandegada of Achham have started demolishing the menstrual sheds as of late they have understood that a woman must not be barred from entering home during menstruation.
Chhaupadi shed is the makeshift hut constructed at a distance from the settlement where women were forced to stay during their periods which was always a safety concern for the women in the district.
Although the chhaupadi practice is towards elimination due to the growing awareness and education, it is still in practice in some remote areas.
Many had to go through various kinds of violence and some even lost their lives in such sheds. On Monday, almost all women of the village gathered in Patakani and demolished all the huts used by women during their menstruation, said local woman leader Putali Devi Khatri.
Putali Devi has suggested the women to stay in their homes maintaining hygiene during menstruation. This has been possible also because the government has criminalised the Chhaupadi practice and rhe families practicing Chhaupadi are deprived of the services provided by the ward and rural municipality offices.
As per the announcement of the government, those who practice Chhaupadi after August 20 will be jailed. A total of 12 women have lost their lives in Chaupadi sheds in the last one decade, according to the records of Women and Children Office, Achham.
